True Stories: Kayleb Wagner | More Than a Record

True Stories: Kayleb Wagner | More Than a Record

There was a time when Kayleb Wagner’s name meant records.

Numbers.

Headlines.

A season people couldn’t ignore.

In 2021, Kayleb rushed for 535 yards and six touchdowns in a single game, breaking a Florida high school rushing record previously held by Derrick Henry. His story quickly went national, eventually earning the attention of Henry himself and ESPN.

And while all of that matters, it’s not the most impressive part of his story.

Because once you look past the stats, what stands out isn’t what he’s done.

It’s who he’s becoming.

Built, Not Given

“God made me who I am today. Through grit, perseverance, and adversity… I trust His plan. Whatever happens, happens. God knows.”

That mindset doesn’t come from comfort.

It comes from being tested. From moments where things don’t go the way they’re supposed to. From having to fight through doubt, comparison, pressure and adversity—quietly.

Kayleb was born without his left forearm and hand. It’s an extraordinary part of his story, but spend any time talking with him and you quickly realize it isn’t what defines him.

Kayleb’s story isn’t one of things simply falling into place.

It’s one of choosing to stay grounded when they don’t.

The Standard Was Always Higher Than Football

For everything Kayleb has accomplished on the field, his identity was never built around it.

Because the standard at home was different.

“You’re not special because you can run a football,” his mom would remind him after a great game.

“What matters is are you a good person?
Do you take care of your responsibilities?
Do you show up the right way when nobody’s watching?
Can you do the dishes?
Can you clean your room?
Do you handle your business?”

That kind of foundation changes everything.

Because when success comes, you don’t lose yourself in it.

When the World Took Notice

On September 17, 2021, Kayleb carried the ball 25 times against South Walton High School.

He ran for 535 yards and six touchdowns, breaking the Florida single-game rushing record previously held by future NFL star Derrick Henry.

Henry reached out personally to congratulate him. ESPN told his story. People across the country suddenly knew the name Kayleb Wagner.

But the headlines only told part of it.

The Part People Don’t See

Breaking records tells one version of the story, but it doesn’t tell the full one.

Because behind it all, there was a different kind of pressure building—not just on the field, but during the recruiting process.

Watching others get offers.

Seeing deals come through for other players.

Wondering where you stand when nobody’s telling you anything.

Why is he getting a deal?

Why am I not?

Am I going to get noticed?

Is someone going to recognize what I’m doing?

“It was a mental battle comparing myself to others.”

When Things Didn’t Go as Planned

At SIU, his freshman year became something different than what he had worked for.

No playing time felt like a role that didn’t match the vision. It was a feeling of just going through the motions—just playing football, but not making an impact.

“I got comfortable. I felt complacent.”

Kayleb kept reminding himself:

“I can’t give up.”

Because there are kids watching.

Kids who see his story and find hope in it. Kids who may be facing their own adversity and wondering whether they can keep going.

Walking away could steal that hope from someone else.

A Second Chance

The move to Thomas More University wasn’t just another opportunity.

“They took a chance on me when no one else did.”

That creates loyalty.

That creates accountability.

And it creates another opportunity to grow.

Kayleb’s primary focus?

“I want to be the best leader and teammate I can be. You can’t just do the right thing—you have to lead and bond.”

Redefining What Winning Means

At some point, success stopped being about stats.

“Am I being true to who I am? Am I being true to my word? Like, TRUE. With the R and U emphasized—R U TRUE?”

For Kayleb, that question isn’t just True Victory branding.

It’s how he lives.

Not perfect. Not flawless.

Just honest. Accountable. Real.

True.

Victory isn’t always loud.

Sometimes it’s discipline when no one’s watching.

Sometimes it’s starting over instead of staying comfortable.

Sometimes it’s choosing growth over ego.

Sometimes it’s continuing when things don’t go according to plan.

“Control what you can and trust God. That’s the best advice I can give anyone.”

Football records may have put Kayleb Wagner in the spotlight, but they don’t define him.

What defines him now is how he lives, how he shows up, how he leads, and who he’s becoming through it all.

Because at the end of the day, it’s never just about what you accomplish.

It’s about who you become in the process.

That’s True Victory.

That’s what it means to be...Always True.
